The Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) invite Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors and Allied Health Clinical Practitioners working in Prehospital emergency care or Primary Health to attend the Primary Health Response to Sexual Assault workshop.
At the end of this CPD event, all Prehospital and Primary Health Care clinical staff and Emergency Department clinical staff will gain an understanding of the immediate needs and appropriate responses in caring for clients in the NT who attend a Prehospital care setting, a Primary Health Care facility or an Emergency Department following a sexual assault.
Attendance at some of the morning educational sessions may be particularly useful for Police. Please contact Course coordinator for further information.
This one day workshop is intended to provide practical skills needed to increase confidence, and knowledge for Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors and Allied Health Clinical Practitioners working in Prehospital emergency care or Primary Healthcare setting when responding to clients who attend their services following a sexual assault.
Target
The Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) invite all primary health care clinicians to attend the Primary Health Response to Sexual Assault workshop.
Learning Outcomes

The workshop will ensure participants will gain a :
- A clear understanding of issues regarding the cultural safety of clients who have been sexually assaulted
- A clear understanding of what constitutes consent
- A clear understanding regarding the definition of sexual assault
- A clear understanding of mandatory reporting guidelines in the NT
- A clear understanding of the prevalence and patterns in sexual assault
- A clear understanding of the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and blood borne virus’ infections (STI’s & BBV’s) in the Northern Territory
- A clear understanding of the Initial primary health care and emergency department management of sexual assault
- A clear understanding of the processes involved in the safe, medical evacuation of clients who have been sexually assaulted
- A clear understanding of the police processes involved in assisting clients who have been sexually assaulted
- A clear understanding of forensic management options, taking a basic forensic history & minimising DNA contamination
- A clear understanding of the processes involved in collection of preliminary forensic samples for forensic analysis and chain of evidence
- A clear understanding of the processes involved in the use of a Preliminary Forensic Kit for a client who has been sexually assaulted - Practical session
- Post workshop certificate following attendance
Pre-Requisite
Prior to attending the training, you are required to log on to MyLearning and complete the assignment activity:
- Investigate what sexual assault services are available in Australia - personal study

This is a full day course - 8:00 to 16:30
Completion
To be marked as completing the training and ensure all workshop activities have been fully understood , you are required to:
- Investigate what sexual assault services are available in Australia - personal study
- Attend the workshop in full (ie. 100%)*
- Complete the online Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) Preliminary Forensic Kit (PFK) training module within a month of attending the workshop
Incomplete training will not constitute as full attendance and therefore you will not receive a pass grade.
