This online course has been developed by Department of Children and Families to support family and foster carers with information and practical strategies to help them meet the best interests of the child or children in their care.

Target

  • New and existing family and foster carers.
  • Child protection staff who work directly with carers.

The training has nine modules:

  6. Complex Behaviours
  7. Caring for a Sibling Group
  8. Ages and Stages
  9. Support, Advocacy and Self-Care

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of being a family or foster carer.
  • Develop practical strategies to become a better carer.
  • Develop understandings about culture in general and learn about some aspects of Aboriginal cultures.
  • Understand why maintaining culture is so important for Aboriginal children in care.
  • Understanding the additional concerns related to caring for a family member.
  • Understand what loss, grief and trauma are and how it affects young people as they grow.
  • Explore some complex behaviours that trauma affected young people might show.
  • Understand the importance of keeping siblings together and connected when they are in the foster care system.
  • Understanding normal development at different stages of a child or young person’s development as well as behaviours of concern and how to access support.
  • Understand what carers can do to look after themselves and where to find help when they need it.

    Duration

    Some modules will take a bit longer to complete than others.

    Expected total duration: 8 hours

    How to Pass

    You must finish each module to complete this training. After completion, you will be able to print a certificate.

    Technical Requirements

    Some modules contain voice overs so you will need to turn on the sound on your mobile phone, tablet or computer (or use headphones). 

    Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities staff and foster carers should contact the NTG Service Desk on 1800 000 254 for technical advice or assistance regarding enabling audio on their device.
