This 2 Day workshop will provide clinicians with the practical components needed to increase  confidence, knowledge and skills in responding to Adult sexual assault.

In the NT, the medical and forensic response for these victims is provided through the Sexual Assault Referral Centres, by doctors and nurses employed within that service. The workshop will provide collaborative frameworks to improve the health, forensic and social supports available to victims and their families following a sexual abuse / sexual assault.

Target

The  Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) invite Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Paediatricians and Primary Health Care General Practitioners to attend the Forensic Medical Management of Adult Sexual Abuse/Assault Workshop.

Learning Outcome

The following material will be addressed and participants will gain:

    1. A clear understanding of issues regarding the cultural safety of clients who have been sexually assaulted
    2. A clear understanding of what constitutes consent to sexual activity
    3. A clear understanding regarding the definition of sexual assault / abuse
    4. A clear understanding of mandatory reporting guidelines in the NT with regard to sexual assault / abuse and domestic violence
    5. A clear understanding of the prevalence and patterns in sexual assault / abuse
    6. A clear understanding of the Initial primary health care and emergency department management of sexual assault
    7. A clear understanding of the processes involved in the safe, medical evacuation of clients who have been sexually assaulted
    8. A clear understanding of the police processes involved in assisting clients who have been sexually assaulted
    9. A clear understanding of maintaining a Chain of Evidence
    10.  A clear understanding of the processes involved in the use of and the ability to use a Preliminary Forensic Kit for a client who has been sexually assaulted, for the collection of forensic specimens.
    11. A clear understanding of forensic management options and the ability to take a basic forensic history & minimise DNA contamination
    12. A clear understanding of and the ability to perform a medical and forensic examination of clients, including genital anatomy and interpretation of findings
    13. A clear understanding of and the ability to obtain photographic and colposcopic documentation
    14. A clear understanding of and the ability to provide the medical management following sexual assault
    15. A clear understanding of the prevalence and interpretation of sexually transmitted infections and blood borne virus infections (STI’s & BBV’s) in the NT; significance in suspected sexual assault / abuse
    16. A clear understanding of legal responsibilities; preparation of documentation; Moot Court experience
    17. A clear understanding of the NT Criminal Justice system

A post workshop certificate will be issued following attendance and completion of the 2 day face to face course and subsequent PFK online training module .

Thurs 17/2 - 0800 – 1630  -  Paediatricians, Doctors, Nurses and Midwives attending for the Adult/Paediatric component of the workshop

                   - 1730-1900     Moot Court (ALL Paediatricians, Doctors, Nurses and Midwives attending for the Adult/Paediatric component of the workshop)

Completion

To be marked as completing the training and ensure all workshop activities have been fully understood , you are required to:

    1. Investigate what sexual assault services are available in Australia - personal study in preparation for attending the face to face workshop
    2. Attend the workshop in full (ie. 100%)
    3. Complete the online Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) Preliminary Forensic Kit (PFK) training module within a month of attending the workshop

Incomplete training will not constitute as full attendance and therefore you will not receive a pass grade.
