Aim
The Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) invite Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors, allied Health and Wellbeing Support Staff and Police working in prehospital and emergency care settings, primary health facilities, supportive health and wellbeing and law enforcement roles to attend the Primary Health Response to Sexual Assault workshop.
At the end of this CPD event, participants will gain an understanding of the immediate needs and appropriate responses of clients in the NT following a disclosure of sexual assault.
This one-day workshop is intended to provide practical skills needed to increase confidence, and knowledge for Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors and Allied Health Clinical Practitioners working in Prehospital emergency care or Primary Healthcare setting when responding to clients who attend their services following a sexual assault.
Attendance at this workshop is also particularly useful for Police. Please contact Course coordinator for further information.
Target audience
Aboriginal Health Practitioners, Nurses, Midwives, Doctors, allied Health and Wellbeing Support Staff and Police working with, or liable to work with individuals following a disclosure of sexual assault
Learning Objectives
The workshop will ensure participants will gain:
- A clear understanding of issues regarding the cultural safety of clients who have been sexually assaulted
- A clear understanding of what constitutes consent
- A clear understanding regarding the definition of sexual assault
- A clear understanding of mandatory reporting guidelines in the NT
- A clear understanding of the prevalence and patterns in sexual assault
- A clear understanding of the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and blood borne virus’ infections (STI’s & BBV’s) in the Northern Territory
- A clear understanding of the Initial primary health care and emergency department management of sexual assault
- A clear understanding of the processes involved in the safe, medical evacuation of clients who have been sexually assaulted
- A clear understanding of the police processes involved in assisting clients who have been sexually assaulted
- A clear understanding of forensic management options, taking a basic forensic history & minimising DNA contamination
- A clear understanding of the processes involved in collection of preliminary forensic samples for forensic analysis and chain of evidence
- A clear understanding of the processes involved in the use of a Preliminary Forensic Kit for a client who has been sexually assaulted - Practical session
Pre-requisite
As part of daily employment responsibilities, provides care and support to individuals in the Northern Territory following a disclosure of sexual assault
Duration and delivery
Face to face training
One day workshop: 08.00 – 16.30hours.
Completion requirements
- Once the training has been delivered, your attendance will be acquitted by the Course Coordinator, and the system will notify you of your grade.
- You must watch the Sexual Assault Preliminary Forensic Kits (PFKs) module in its entirety to be marked as completed and upload your certificate to be able to progress on to the remaining activities in this course.
- If you have completed the training successfully, you will be required to complete an online evaluation in order to obtain your Certificate of Attendance.
