Aim

A multi-disciplinary approach will be emphasized on the course to meet the needs of the patient across the care continuum. Participants will also be provided with practical learning sessions and will be presented with thought provoking case scenarios. Participants are will also be considered as burns resource personnel and are expected to pro-actively support burns patients in their respective workplace.

Target audience 

Suitable participants include doctors, nurses, Defence health personnel, medics, paramedics, mine site staff, emergency services, and public health/DoH senior staff.

Learning objectives

  • Discuss the role of the Royal Darwin Hospital Burns Service in the management of burns in the Top End
  • Describe different mechanisms of burns
  • Discuss the physiology of burn injuries and the importance of first aid
  • Assess burns injuries
  • Discuss several surgical modalities in management of burns
  • Discuss the fluid resuscitation requirements for a burn injury
  • Discuss options for wound management of a burn injury
  • Describe the care of a graft and graft donor site
  • Discuss the roles of the allied health team in the management of a burn
  • Discuss the management of paediatric burns patient
  • Determine need of patients with major burns in the emergency, intensive care and sub-acute ward.

Pre-requisite

  • You will receive a pre-course manual and readings one month prior to face to face course date.
  • Manual and readings must be completed and brought to the workshop.

On the day, you will need to bring the following items to the training:

  • Your own lunch
  • Jumper as the room can be quite cool at times
  • Water bottle
  • Pen and notebook

Tea/Coffee are provided.

Completion requirements

  • To complete the course, it is important that you attend both days of the course and fill out the online evaluation form to obtain your certificate.
  • A pre-course manual will be distributed to your work area once your enrolment is complete.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

14 hours CPD for attending the 2-day face to face workshop.

Cost and payment process 

There is no cost involved for the Department of Health employees. External participants are required to pay $100 per day to undertake this course. See Payment process below.

  • Participant must make required payment to the Receiver of Territory Monies quoting the course they wish to attend.
  • Please send payment receipt to CLEaRS.DOH@nt.gov.au 

Cancelling a session

If you are unable to attend the workshop and need to cancel it, you must send an email to the course coordinator via CLEaRS.DOH@nt.gov.au at least 2 days before the session otherwise you will be marked as a No Show.

A non-attendance fee of $250 will apply if notice of cancellation is not received at least 48 hours prior to course commencement. In addition, fees will not be refunded if package has been sent to applicant.
