The aim of this course is to develop the technical and non-technical skills and knowledge relevant to advanced life support.

Overview

The aim of this program is to establish a skilled local team of accredited instructors for the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) Adult and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (ALS) Programs.

The hands-on workshop offers participants with the chance to strengthen their teaching and assessments skills with content aligned to the latest Australian New Zealand Council of Resuscitation (ANZCOR) Guidelines and Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) Licencing Agreement.

Key Instructor development skills include:

  • Effective content delivery techniques
  • Simulation and scenario design and facilitation
  • Using debriefing as a powerful learning tool
  • Conducting competency-based assessments
  • Delivering constructive feedback
  • Networking opportunities with fellow resuscitation educators
  • ALS recertification for eligible participants

Target audience

Doctors, Registered Nurses, Midwives and Paramedics willing and available to instruct in the ACCCN Adult and Paediatric ALS Courses delivered in the CARHS region.

Pre-requisite

To participate in this instructor development program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Certification

Hold a current and valid Adult ALS or Paediatric ALS certification, typically from a recognised provider such as the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) or the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). Certification must have been completed within the last 12–18 months.

  • Clinical Experience

Demonstrated experience in advanced life support as part of your clinical duties, or regular involvement in teaching these skills — ideally within critical care, emergency, or resuscitation settings.

  • Department of Health Nursing & Midwifery Staff

Must have Unit Manager approval, including:

  • Support to attend the workshop
  • Ongoing management support to instruct in ALS workshops throughout the year.
    This ensures long-term sustainability and integration of the program.

  • Facilitate an ALS simulation scenario session (including debriefing).
  • Instruct in a clinical skills station (defibrillation or airway).
  • Facilitate a skills station assessment – ALS Team Leader/Skills assessment (including feedback).

  • Fully attend the 2-day workshop.
  • Once the training has been delivered, your attendance will be acquitted by the Course Coordinator, and the system will notify you of your grade.
  • You will receive your certificate from ACCCN directly via email.

Course instructions

Pre-course preparation

At least three weeks out from the course you will receive an email from the course coordinator with a guideline on pre-course preparation that you need to undertake. This email will include:

  • ALS Candidate Assessment Criteria
  • Instructor Assessment
  • Instructor Program
  • The PowerPoint Slide you will be presenting, information on the skill to be presented and Simulation Scenario you will be presenting/running (with supervision) during the ACCCN 2-day workshop.

If you have not received this email three weeks out, please contact the Course Coordinator.

ACCCN login & pre-course MCQ

Approximately, four weeks out from the course the Course Coordinator will have a list of confirmed participants (this is confirmed after the enrolment cut-off date). All confirmed participants will be emailed with a link to register for the course on ACCCN. This login will enable you to access and complete the pre quiz on an improved platform. Upon completion of the course, you will receive an automated email with a link to your electronic certificate which will also be accessible through your login.

Please note: you do not have to pass the online quiz to attend the two-day workshop, it is simply to see how you are going with the manual content. You can attempt/re-attempt this multiple times and you do not have to finish in one go. The content will be discussed and there will also be a multiple-choice quiz (MCQ) testing ALS knowledge as part of the course.

On the day

Appropriate clothing for performing CPR in a clinical setting along with closed-in shoes must be worn.

There is a fridge and microwave available for your use. This is a non-catered course.

Completion requirements

Achieve the following criteria, during the workshop and corresponding ALS workshop:

  • Attend the full 2-day workshop.
  • Deliver a didactic session presenting ALS/BLS content.
  • Facilitate an ALS simulation scenario, including structured debriefing.
  • Instruct in a clinical skills station, such as defibrillation or airway management.
  • Facilitate a skills station assessment, including ALS Team Leader evaluation and feedback.
  • Participation Fee: $300 per person

Cancellation policy

Participants must notify the Course Coordinator directly to cancel or withdraw from the course.

100% Refund

  • Withdrawal notified 30 days or more before the course start date
  • Withdrawal supported by a medical certificate, statutory declaration, or statement from manager
  • Course cancellation initiated by the provider

50% Refund

  • Withdrawal notified between 7–30 days before the course start date
  • A 50% penalty will apply to the course fee

No Refund

  • Withdrawal notified within 7 days of course commencement
  • Withdrawal after the course has started
  • No notice of withdrawal

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

ACCCN ALS courses are accredited for 8 CPD hours per day.

How to book a workshop

  1. To access bookings for face to face, click on the "Book a workshop" section of the course.
  2. Find a date and a time that suits you and select on the "Sign-up" button on the far right of the screen.
  3. Check that your manager’s name is correct. If not, click on the CHOOSE MANAGER button to select the correct manager.
  4. Select REQUEST APPROVAL.
  5. You will only receive a calendar invite once the manager or administrator approves your application. Be sure to contact your Manager or the Course Owner to follow up your application if you have not received a calendar invitation.
