The aim of this course is to develop the technical and non-technical skills and knowledge relevant to adult advanced life support. |
Overview
The aim of this program is to build a local team of accredited instructors for the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses Adult and Paediatric ALS Programs. The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to develop and enhance their teaching and assessments skills.
The content reflects the current Australian New Zealand Council of Resuscitation (ANZCOR) Guidelines and Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) Licencing Agreement
The development of Instructor skills such as:
- Content delivery
- Simulation and scenario development and implementation
- Debriefing as a learning tool
- Conducting assessments
- Providing feedback
- Opportunity for resuscitation educators to network with their peers
- ALS recertification
Target audience
Doctors, Registered Nurses, Midwives and Paramedics willing and available to instruct in the ACCCN Adult and Paediatric ALS Courses delivered in the CARHS region.
Pre-requisite

Current ACCCN ALS or accredited ALS provider.
- Achieve Team Leader status in their ALS course.
- Pass the ALS recertification practical assessment and achieve a pass mark of 80%

Greater than 3 years post graduate experience, with a sound understanding of adult and paediatric responses to clinical deterioration, cardiopulmonary arrest and resuscitation processes.

DoH Nursing & Midwifery Staff must have Unit Manager’s Approval.

This includes support to attend the workshop and management support to instruct in sessions on subsequent 2-day workshop following the course and throughout the year. This is to ensure sustainability for the program.

Participation at Corresponding 2-day ACCCN Adult or Paediatric ALS Course
- Deliver a didactic session – presentation of ALS/BLS content.
- Facilitate an ALS simulation scenario session (including debriefing).
- Instruct in a clinical skills station (defibrillation or airway).
- Facilitate a skills station assessment – ALS Team Leader/Skills assessment (including feedback).

Clinical Education Team (CARHS) in conjunction with Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN).
Completion requirements
Achieve the following criteria, during the workshop and corresponding ALS workshop:
- Attend full 2-day workshop.
- Deliver a didactic session – presentation of ALS/BLS content.
- Facilitate an ALS simulation scenario session (including debriefing).
- Instruct in a clinical skills station (defibrillation or airway).
- Facilitate a skills station assessment – ALS Team Leader/Skills assessment (including feedback).
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
ACCCN ALS courses are accredited for 8 CPD hours per day.
For Medical Officers, ACCCN ALS courses are endorsed with the following medical colleges:
- ACEM
- ACRRM
- ANZCA
- CICM
- RACGP
- RACP

- To access bookings for the face-to-face workshops, click on the "Book a session" button.
- Choose a date and a time that suits you and click on the "Sign-up" button on the far right of the screen.
How to secure your place in the course
Your enrolment request will be reviewed and dependent upon the following:
- Manager Approval
Including support to attend the workshop and management support to instruct in sessions on subsequent 2-day workshop following the course and throughout the year. - Confirmation of payment.
Costs
Participants are required to pay $300 to attend or undertake this course. See Payment process below.
Note: This course does not include catering.
Payment process
Under the Payment section, click on the payment link relevant to the date of the course you have applied to attend.
Please allow 2 business days for your course application to be approved. The approval process also involves confirming whether you or your unit will be paying for the course. The next steps regarding payment will then be made available on the course.
Once the payment has been confirmed, you will be able to see all content on this course page and your place on the course will be finalised.
Cancellation policy
Participants must contact the Course Coordinator to inform of cancellation/withdrawal.
- 100% refund: notification of withdrawal 30 days prior to course commencement date; notification of withdrawal supported by a medical certificate, statutory declaration or statement from manager; cancelled by provider.
- 50% refund notification of withdrawal received between 7-30 days will incur a 50% penalty of course fees.
- No refund: notification of withdrawal within 7 days of commencement, notification of withdrawal after commencement or no notice of withdrawal will incur a 100% penalty of course fees.
- Application for refund is through NTG Accounts Payable.
