Target
A course for Health staff (including health workers, Nurses, Midwives and Doctors) and Police responding to recent sexual assault
Purpose
This online course is designed for health staff and police responding to a recent sexual assault.
Sexual assault can happen to anyone. A significant delay in accessing a definitive forensic medical examination is not uncommon. This delay is often due to patient circumstances and distance between Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC). Preliminary Forensic Kits (PFKs) may help to obtain forensic evidence when there is a delay in the Forensic Medical Examinations (FME). Allowing evidence to be collected immediately and improve the comfort and wellbeing of the patient.
The course includes the necessary skill development to obtain and use Preliminary Forensic Kits (PFKs)
Learning Outcomes
- Respond appropriately and effectively to a client disclosure of a sexual assault
- Recognise situations where PFKs can be used
- Obtain consent for PFK evidence collection
- Identify which samples need to be collected in response to specific types of sexual assault
- Instruct clients through specimen collection
- Label specimens accurately
- Maintain the chain of evidence
