The Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) is a joint World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF project that aims to create a healthcare environment where breastfeeding is the norm, and practices known to promote the wellbeing of all mothers and infants are promoted. The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are the global criteria against which maternity hospitals are assessed and accredited.
This course container is for Group 1 staff who wish to apply for RPL for 8 hours theoretical breastfeeding education.

The purpose is to record Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in regard to breast feeding education.
The required 8 hours of education (that will be used to request RPL) must include:
- counselling
- establishing Breastfeeding
- breastfeeding Challenges.
Aim
To ensure adequate staff knowledge and skills to ensure all mothers and babies receive appropriate support and contemporary information in the antenatal and postnatal period, regarding infant feeding.
Target audience
This RPL upload is suitable for GROUP 1 staff who have contact with pregnant women, mothers, their newborn infants and families.
The staff may include all staff working in Maternity or Special Care Nursery:
- midwives
- lactation Consultant
- nurses
- doctors
- Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.
Learning Objectives
It is expected that RPL activities will meet the following criteria:
- outline the role of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) to protect, promote and support breastfeeding
- demonstrate knowledge and skills to implement and translate the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding into clinical practice
- apply the BFHI 20 Core Competencies to clinical practice.
Pre-requisite

Duration and delivery
This is a request for assessment of RPL. The prior learning undertaken should equal at least 8 hours.
Technical requirements
This course will require secure internet access.
The ability to scan and upload a document to a computer. Staff are strongly encouraged to provide soft copy of document in PDF form. An image (.jpg) only can be accepted if it provides a clear view of document. Maximum upload capacity is 10MB.
Completion requirements
To complete this course, you will need to:
1. submit evidence of completion of the course you believe is appropriate for RPL
2. upload proof of completion of the core competencies assessment.
Assessment and Grading
Assessment of RPL and core competencies is completed by the Lactation Consultant in your area.
Please allow 10 business days for marking and notification of completion.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
This course is for application for RPL.
Courses that may be accepted for RPL include but are not limited to:

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
For successful approval of RPL, courses should be recognised for at least 8 hours of theoretical training.

There is no cost associated with application for RPL.
