Aim

This course covers the First Response steps in newborn resuscitation.

Target audience 

This course is intended for midwives, graduate midwives, student midwives, Special Care Nursery, Theatre nurses and Interns

Learning objective

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the skills required to provide First Response Care for the Newborn
  • Implement escalating life support for newborns not responding to steps carried out in the First Response 
  • Apply the ARC Newborn Life Support algorithm
  • Demonstrate the techniques of:
    • Airway management and ventilation
    • Corrective steps to improve inadequate ventilation
    • LMA insertion
    • Cardiac compressions
  • Understand the importance and principles of documentation and teamwork in relation to Newborn Life Support

Pre-requisite

  • Complete the NeoResus e-learning module (contained within this course)
  • Competent in Basic Life Support and/ or Immediate Life Support skills

Please note that there is some advanced resus theory contained within the e-learning - the face to face will focus on First Response.

Duration and delivery

NeoResus First Response is a 3 hour face to face course that involves an online pre-requisite component.  

  • Online NeoResus e-learning - approx. 1 hr
  • Face to Face - 3 hours 

Complete skills sessions including workstations, scenarios and assessments:

  • Newborn Life Support flowchart
  • Resuscitaire equipment set up and troubleshooting
  • First response steps in resuscitation
  • Ventilation and cardiac compressions
  • Use of Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA)
  • Scenarios x 3

Completion requirements

To complete this course, participants must follow the steps in order listed below:

  • Step 1: Go to the Sign Up tile and sign up for a face-to-face skills training session.  Course Coordinator will 'confirm' your enrolment based on priority.
  • Step 2: Go to the Learning Module tile and complete the module prior to the training session.
  • Step 3: Attend the 3 hour face-to-face skills training that you have already signed up for.

Technical requirements

  • You may prefer to use a headset to listen to the narration within the eLearning modules.
  • Closed captions are available within the eLearning modules.
  • Viewing the modules on a large monitor/screen is recommended.
  • You can view the modules on a laptop; however, you may experience legibility issues in some areas. Viewing the modules on a tablet or other mobile device is not recommended.

Note: This face-to-face training uses simulation-based skill assessments. Closed in shoes are required in Sim-Lab.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Successful participants receive four (4) CPD hours.

Cost and payment process 

There is no cost to attend this training. Priority and confirmation of enrolment will be given as per Educator and Manager recommendation.
