Overview
The aim of this course is to develop the technical and non-technical skills and knowledge relevant to newborn advanced life support. The content reflects the current ARC ANZCOR Neonatal Guidelines and the ILCOR Recommendations.
You are required to sign up for preferred date and then make payment of $100 to your hospital RTM. Once payment received, you will receive access to the e-Learning component.
Aim
The aim of this training program is to:
- Ensure clinicians are confident in applying the skills in First Response to a Newborn
- Improve outcomes for newborns who do not respond to steps in First Response Resuscitation.
- Provide structured education for health professionals.
This training will provide opportunities for health professionals to gain NeoResus certification.
Target audience
This course is intended for all doctors, advance practice nurses, midwives and those who may be required to offer advanced neonatal support at the time of birth. This includes members of code blue neonatal response teams. Priority bookings will apply to: senior midwifes, team leaders, NICU nurses and senior medical officers.
Learning objectives

At the end of this course you should be able to:
- Demonstrate the skills required to provide First Response Care for the Newborn
- Implement escalating life support for newborns not responding to steps carried out in the First Response
- Apply the ARC Newborn Life Support algorithm
- Understand when and how to use each of the following devices or techniques:
- Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA)
- Endotracheal intubation (ETT)
- Umbilical Vein Catheterisation (UVC)
- SpO2 and ECG (Electrocardiography) monitoring
- Emergency Intraosseous access
- Understand the importance and principles of documentation and teamwork in relation to Newborn Advanced Resuscitation
Pre-requisite
- Complete the NeoResus e-learning module (contained within this course)
- Competent in Basic Life Support and/ or Immediate Life Support skills
- Greater than 1 year post graduate experience with an understanding of newborn response to clinical deterioration, cardiopulmonary arrest and resuscitation processes.
Duration and delivery
NeoResus Advanced Resusciation is a full day face to face course that involves an online pre-requisite component.
Online NeoResus e-Learning - approx. 1 hr
Face to Face - 7 hours
Complete skills sessions including workstations, scenarios and assessments:
- Newborn Life Support flowchart
- Umbilical Vein Catheter (UVC) and Resuscitation drugs
- Intraosseous access
- Neonatal intubation
- Resuscitare
- Scenarios
Note: This face to face training uses simulation-based skill assessments. Closed in shoes are required in Sim-Lab.
Completion requirements
To complete this course, participants must follow the steps in order listed below:
- Step 1: Go to the Sign Up tile and sing up for a face-to-face skills training session.
- Step 2: Go to the Payment tile and upload proof of payment.
- Step 3: Go to the Learning Module tile and complete the module prior to the training session.
- Step 4: Attend the full day face-to-face skills training that you have already signed up for.
Technical requirements
Learning modules may contain video / sound / voice-overs. Participants are recommended to access these modules on a device that has sound enabled. For participants using NTG computers, please contact NTG Service Desk for technical advice or assistance on 1800 000 254 if required.
Cost and payment process
Participants are required to pay $100 to attend or undertake this course. Course fee can be paid for by participants or unit cost codes (receipt/evidence of payment required).
