This course will provide an understanding of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to perform successful Venipuncture and PIVC insertion.

Overview

This course will provide both the knowledge and practical skills required to perform successful Venipuncture and PIVC insertion. Content includes an overview of anatomy and physiology of the venous system, assessment of vasculature for Venipuncture, risks of blood exposure for both the patient and the blood collector, and the theoretical and practical skills required to perform successful Venipuncture and PIVC insertion.

Target audience

A course for nurses, doctors, and other clinical staff who cannulate or collect blood.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the theoretical and practical skills required to perform successful Venipuncture and PIVC insertion.
  • Understand and identify blood vessels and related anatomy required to perform peripheral Venipuncture and PIVC insertion.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the risks from Blood exposure.
  • Demonstrate aseptic technique in performing the Venipuncture and PIVC insertion procedures.
  • Understand the safety precautions and potential complications of Venipuncture and PIVC insertion.

Pre-requisites

  • Read the pre-workshop reading material.
  • Complete the online learning module.
  • Successfully complete the multiple-choice quiz (MCQ).
  • Review the PIVC and Venipuncture competency assessments.
  • Register for a workshop.

Duration

The face-to-face workshop runs for 4 hours, with a theory session and simulation where participants are able to practice the skill in a safe simulation environment. 

Course completion

Course completion is achieved once the practical skill competency assessments have been submitted and marked complete.

The course is designed to be flexible and meet the participants practical clinical skill needs, and as such participants having the choice of completing one or both competencies. 

Attend workshop

On completion of the workshop, provided the pre-requisites have been completed, participants will be able to access a certificate of attendance.

In order to complete the course, participants must also submit completed competency assessments. 

Practical clinical competency assessments

The course also includes a practical competency assessment for both Venipuncture and PIVC insertion.

Participants will need to perform 5x cannulation and/or 5x Venipuncture assessments to complete the course.

Up to 2 Assessments for each competency may be simulated during the face-to-face workshop, but at least 3 of the 5 assessments must be performed in the clinical setting on patients.

The assessments can be performed by any doctor, nurse or clinical nurse educator who has completed the course, or a health care worker who is experienced in Venipuncture/ PIVC insertion.

To complete the course, participants need to submit the completed competency assessments to the course coordinator.

The participant has 8 weeks from the date of the workshop to complete the assessments. Extensions to the 8-week timeframe for competency submission can be negotiated with the course coordinator, if required.

Once the participant has completed the competency assessment, they will receive a certificate of competency.
