The IMPROVE education workshops are designed to address the educational needs of health professionals involved in maternity and newborn care in managing perinatal death based on the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand’s (PSANZ) Perinatal Mortality Guideline. 

Warning: Graphic Content - This course relates to the care of bereaved parents, photos of stillborn babies and autopsy results will be present.

Target audience 

This course is relevant to obstetricians, midwives, neonatal nurses, neonatologists, and social workers. It may also interest those who work in ED, PERIOP and ICU, AHP, mortuary workers and those interested in policy or public health development.

Priority will be given to clinicians working in maternity and newborn care.

Overview

The workshop utilises the SCORPIO educational model designed for skills training. This involves small groups of learners rotating around six interactive learning stations that are each facilitated by an experienced educator.

LEARNING STATIONS

- Communicating with parents about perinatal autopsy

- Autopsy and placental examination

- Investigation of fetal deaths

- Examination of babies who die in the perinatal period

- Institutional perinatal mortality

- Respectful and supportive bereavement care

Provider

In partnership with the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ), the Stillbirth CRE has developed IMPROVE - IMproving Perinatal Mortality Review and Outcomes Via Education. This is a PSANZ accredited national course, trainers are required to complete annual training and teaching will be in accordance with evidence based national guidelines.

Duration and delivery

This is a blended course comprising completion of online modules and full attendance at the four-hour face to face workshop. 

Completion requirements

  1. Completion of online modules
  2. Submission of evidence of completion of online modules
  3. Full attendance of face-to-face training

Technical requirements

This course will require internet connection to complete the online modules via an external website. The Stillbirth CRE website is smartphone and tablet compatible.
