Aim

This face-to-face workshop provides participants with the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to deterioration in the older individual.

Target audience 

This course is recommended for Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, First Nation trainees and lifestyle coordinators who work in residential aged care homes.
*Not intended for NTG employees

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Recognise early signs of deterioration in older individuals by identifying subtle changes from baseline using observation and the STOP AND WATCH tool.
  • Perform a structured A–G assessment to systematically assess clinical deterioration and prioritise life‑threatening concerns in an aged‑care context.
  • Escalate concerns clearly and confidently using ISOBAR, ensuring timely, accurate, and effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Apply culturally safe, person‑centred communication that respects dignity, supports trust, and incorporates the older individual’s baseline, family input, and goals of care.
  • Integrate recognition, assessment, and communication skills during simulation scenarios to improve teamwork, decision‑making, and confidence in responding to deterioration in real‑world aged‑care settings.

7.5 hours face-to-face.

To be marked as completed participants must:

  • fully attend all of the workshop
  • complete an evaluation.
